Wild Life Week
On 5th of October four Salwanians (Manav Bansal 8D, Kanika Oberoi 8D, Bhavya Chawla 8C and Kirti Jain 8C) of class VIII participated in Wildlife week, which is celebrated in the first week of October. The event was organized WWF and TRAFFIC in collaboration with the National Zoological Park, the venue of the program. A number of school children accompanied by their teachers participated in the event.
With the weather gods being extremely merciful the Delhi zoo was the perfect venue for celebrating Wildlife week. The children were divided into two groups – one for a nature trail and the other for a treasure hunt.
NATURE TRAIL - Lead by two volunteers and bird expert Rajat Bhargava the children learned to identify some common birds through their diagnostic characteristic feature. Some of the birds spotted were – White throated Kingfisher, Pariah Kite, Little cormorant, Painted Stork, Pelicans, Indian Moorhen, Common myna, bank myna, Spotted bill ducks, Hornbills etc. En-route the children also observed some fascinating animals and learned a number of interesting facts about many of them.
TREASURE HUNT – Organised by ELF the treasure hunt aimed at making kids little detectives, following and deciphering each clue through exploration and teamwork. En-route the treasure hunt they also had to observe and note the botanical and common names of 10 trees, interesting facts about 10 animals and list 5 do’s and don’ts in the zoo.
Besides, there were games and quizzes for the kids too. Each group was also given an opportunity to introduce themselves and their schools. Our children spoke confidently about all the initiatives taken by our school in the field of environment. The efforts of our school were appreciated by many present in the event. Participation certificates were given to all kids along with caps and badges.
Visit to Aravalli Biodiversity Park
Illusion.
Its surely that man is capable of overpowering mother nature. Its an illusion that man can conquer nature. Nature is the ‘whole’ and we are just a part of it. Its power, its magic is so intense and effective that time and again, man moves back into the lap of Mother Nature to recollect energy, to recollect what he has lost in the material world. It’s not without a reason that nature is prefixed with the word ‘Mother’. It has all the motherly qualities, like a mother, who despite the ill-behaviour of her child, would simply accept him with arms open wide. Mother Nature is so loving that it embraces each and every evil mind too with all its love, magic and healing care,no matter how much harm we have done to it.
On 9th October’09, Salwan visited the Aravalli Biodiversity Park, Vasant Kunj. It was one of the best trips ever organized because its destination was nowhere our own life source, nature. The Aravalli Biodiversity Park is a 700 acre space specially reserved in Delhi for restoring the flora and fauna of India. It was a mining area earlier, rich in quartz, badarpur and mica. It took nearly three years for the people-in-charge to convert a complete mining area into a lush green park. The vivid image of the inviting gardens is still fresh, wide and clear in front of my eyes. I can still feel the immense power I experienced, when I was there. For the first time, I felt that I could breathe air which was so fresh. I had so much to see but time was a constraint. I spend hours watching the different shades of green all round, listen to nature’s music…chirping of birds, hum of insects, and song of nightingale. I was amazed to see the slithering baby cobra, dive of Shikra, peacock’s dance, scintillating colors of different butterflies like: Peacock Pansy ,Blue Pansy, Green Jewel etc. It was touching to learn that Mother Nature provides us medicines to cure almost all diseases. Medicinal treasure that the plants provide was immense and huge, be it the insect repellant Amaltas, skin care and blood purifier Aloe-Vera, anti obesity - ashvagandha, antifungal and anti-viral Mulethi, Lemon grass and Tulsi.
As far as my two little eyes could see, it was naturalization of humans and not humanization of nature and the sight was nothing, but simply beautiful.
Night Sky Observation
Have you ever wondered where all the stars have gone? In our light polluted cities we don’t see more than three or four stars in the night sky.
To observe the unpolluted star studded sky, on 15th October’ 2009 Astronomy club members of our school visited LD Public School, Jewar, U.P. The school is located in the midst of the jungle, far from the city. First of all, we were given instructions by the educator assigned to us by GNOMON- regarding the use of planisphere to locate the position of stars according to the date and month. After the introduction session we went to the field work. It was very exciting to see so many stars in the sky which we would never see in our cities polluted by light. We saw many constellations about which we read in our books. We felt like we were on a space trip, so close to our next planet-Mars. We saw the brightest star –Sirius, Ganymede- the biggest moon of Jupiter, couple of shooting stars etc.
It was like a dream come true for amateur astronomers of our school. We look forward to have more such star gazing sessions and hands -on experience with the telescope etc.
Art Exhibition
“FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION”, an Art Exhibition by Salwan Public School
An Art Exhibition “Freedom of Expression” was organized by Salwan Public School, Rajinder Nagar at All India Fine Arts and Craft Society from 29-31 July, 2009. The Art Exhibition was inaugurated by Eminent Artist (Sculptor & Painter), Prof. Biman B. Das, Ex-Professor, College of Art, Delhi and Ex-Principal of Govt. College, Kolkata. The artifacts of the students from Classes I-XII were put up at the exhibition. Around 400 paintings, 4 sculptures and 300 craft works put up on display were greatly appreciated. Art works worth Rs.40,000/- worth sold during the course of the exhibition. At the inaugural ceremony, Shri Michael Dias, Hon’ble Member, Managing Committee, praised the beautiful art works prepared by the children and inspired them to use their creative power and imagination.
We, at Salwan feel that art occupies a prominent place among children. While they do not understand the “reason”, they enjoy playing with colours, through their spontaneity, creativity and imagination. This “conspicuous” communication tool enables students to use their creative power and propels their imagination on the wings of fire, into a fantastic world of colours.
At Salwan Public School, we take pride in acquainting our students with the various skills involved in art and provide numerous opportunities to those who display talent and inclination towards it, to evolve into “artists” in their own right. This exhibition, which was especially organized in an art gallery, was aimed to give a platform to our budding stars to showcase their creative excellence and experience a sense of achievement and fulfillment in an environment used by renowned artists for the display of their exhibits.
