NIGHT SKY OBSERVATION

Have you ever wondered where all the stars have gone? In our light polluted cities we don’t see more than three or four stars in the night sky.To observe the unpolluted star studded sky, on 15th October’ 2009 Astronomy club members of our school visited LD Public School, Jewar, U.P. The school is located in the midst of the jungle, far from the city. First of all, we were given instructions by the educator assigned to us by GNOMON- regarding the use of planisphere to locate the position of stars according to the date and month. After the introduction session we went to the field work. It was very exciting to see so many stars in the sky which we would never see in our cities polluted by light. We saw many constellations about which we read in our books. We felt like we were on a space trip, so close to our next planet-Mars. We saw the brightest star –Sirius, Ganymede- the biggest moon of Jupiter, couple of shooting stars etc.It was like a dream come true for amateur astronomers of our school. We look forward to have more such star gazing sessions and hands -on experience with the telescope etc.
